Understanding the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types
MBTI categorizes personalities into 16 types based on four dichotomies: Extraversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, and Judging vs. Perceiving.
The Four Dichotomies
- E/I - Energy source: External (people, action) vs. Internal (reflection, ideas)
- S/N - Information: Concrete facts (Sensing) vs. Patterns and possibilities (iNtuition)
- T/F - Decisions: Logic and objectivity (Thinking) vs. Values and impact (Feeling)
- J/P - Lifestyle: Planned and organized (Judging) vs. Flexible and spontaneous (Perceiving)
Common Type Applications
NTs (Analysts) excel in strategy, science, and engineering. NFs (Diplomats) thrive in counseling, teaching, and creative writing. SJs (Sentinels) succeed in administration, logistics, and healthcare. SPs (Explorers) excel in trades, arts, and emergency response.
Limitations
MBTI has lower scientific validity than Big Five. Use it for team-building and communication insights, not as a sole hiring criterion. Many psychologists prefer Big Five for predictive accuracy.
MBTI results can vary when retaken. Use trends over time rather than treating a single result as definitive.
